RAFT member’s letter in the Roanoke Times
Ileada Ribble’s letter to the editor, Ask candidates to back the FairTax, was published in the July 9th Roanoke Times (6th letter in the post). Ileada’s original-length letter is even better:
Dear editor, How would you like to axe the IRS? The makings are in place–HR 25, the FairTax bill. With passage of this legislation, all federal taxes are repealed. No federal income tax. You get to keep all your hard-earned money for yourself. The only federal taxes you would pay would be whenever you buy something. This would be a designated percentage, which is already embedded in the price of each item you buy. “Rich” or poor, all pay this tax. No loopholes for the “rich” to use to avoid paying “their share”. Only if you buy will you pay. Then, each month you will receive a prebate for taxes you paid for necessities such as food, clothing, and medicine. This prebate works much like the economic stimulus check you just received. Sound good? Well,it could happen. Every month you would find this check in your mail box if the Congress would see that this bill is passed. Gone, too, will be that headache which usually occurs on April 15, when you are forced to file your tax report. Has our Congressman in the 6th. district signed on supporting this bill? He has not! Why not? Call and ask him. His name is Bob Goodlatte. Has the Republican candidate for the Senate, Jim Gilmore, stated his support for HR 25? No. He feels it would raise taxes. Call Mr. Gilmore, and tell him if he wants your vote, he will check out this bill more thoroughly than with his emotions as a yardstick. Now, Virgil Goode is an exception. He supports HR 25. Perhaps you would want to call him, too; to thank him. Enough is enough is enough. We deserve statesmen who will work for our good. Right?
